Symptoms

Error: The QuickBooks SDK has failed to register the SmartVault user interface extension.

SmartVault Toolbar is not active (grayed out) when a QuickBooks entry is selected.

SmartVault Toolbar displays only on the Home, Reports, and Snapshot pages in QuickBooks.

SmartVault is not listed on the Company menu in QuickBooks.

SmartVault Toolbar does not display in QuickBooks after installing the SmartVault Desktop software and adding a QuickBooks company file to SmartVault.

SmartVault Toolbar doesn’t do anything when you click Sign in on the SmartVault Toolbar.

Cause

This issue occurs when there is a communication problem, or more technically, a registration problem, between SmartVault and QuickBooks. In order for SmartVault and QuickBooks to communicate, QuickBooks requires that

SmartVault write a specific file to the
ProgramFilesIntuitQBVersionComponentsRegisteredUI
folder on your computer. However, this error indicates that SmartVault cannot write this file to the folder because SmartVault does not have write permissions for this folder.

This problem most often occurs when you perform the following actions:

You install SmartVault on a Windows 7 computer where QuickBooks 2011 is installed and User Account Controls (UAC) are set to med-high or high.

You install SmartVault on a Windows Vista computer where QuickBooks 2011 is installed and UAC is enabled.

You have upgraded an existing installation of QuickBooks with SmartVault to the latest QuickBooks version in a different directory on a Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 computer.

You have updated the
QuickBooks SDK as a result of a QuickBooks update on a Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 computer.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, ensure that SmartVault is correctly registered with QuickBooks.

Close QuickBooks.

Open the Windows Task Manager on your computer (Ctrl+Alt+Del), and then on the Processes tab, verify that QBW32.exe is no longer running. If it is running, select it and then click End Process.

Run the Fix QuickBooks Registration tool in SmartVault by completing the following steps:

In the bottom right-hand corner of your computer desktop (in the notification area by your clock) right-click on the SmartVault keyhole icon.

Click Actions > Fix QuickBooks Registration.

If Windows displays an “Allow this application to make changes” message, click Yes or OK.

The verification message “Your computer is ready for use” should display.

After the verification message displays, complete the following steps:

Click Start > Programs > SmartVault > SmartVault Launchpad, and then sign in to SmartVault.

Reopen QuickBooks.

Answer security question (if prompted) about allowing SmartVault to run.

The SmartVault Toolbar should now display in QuickBooks

Backup your QuickBooks data with SmartVault

You can backup your QuickBooks company files using the native QuickBooks backup tool, or you can use SmartVault to backup your company files. Both methods allow for manual backing up, but SmartVault also allows you to schedule backups, per X number of times you close the file.

The process SmartVault uses when backing up your QuickBooks company file is:

SmartVault recalls the path to the company file from the registry setting at HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\SmartVaultCorporation\QuickBooks\LocalDatabases\.

The SmartVault Backup is a zip file that contains the company file, .QBW, and its related files including .DSN, .LGB, .TLS, and .ND file extensions.

SmartVault takes the zipped file and chunks it up into smaller pieces, and then uploads it to the Backups folder in your vault under Applications\Quickbooks\CompanyName.

Once it uploaded to SmartVault, it verifies that all the chunks were successfully uploaded and this step completes the backup process.

Note: SmartVault does not apply any specific settings like verification during the backup/restore process. We recommend that you use the native QuickBooks backup with the option set for complete verification at least once a month, but use SmartVault backup service for daily backing up. The SmartVault backup service is applied per workstation and you should decide how to configure that setting for every person in your workflow who is using the SmartVault toolbar in QuickBooks to attach documents to transactions.

As part of a disaster recovery plan, you should periodically restore your SmartVault backup of your QuickBooks company file to ensure that it is in working order.

Symptom

I downloaded the SmartVault QuickBooks Online Chrome Extension but it doesn’t show up in my browser bar. The SmartVault QuickBooks Online Chrome Extension does not show up in my browser bar.

Cause

This occurs because the SmartVault extension for Google Chrome is not a part of the Chrome Webstore.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, save the extension to your local Downloads folder and install it to your Chrome browser manually.

Ensure you have downloaded the SmatVault QuickBooks Online extension for the Chrome Browser and it is saved in your downloads folder.

The file name you should look for is “smartvaultbrowserextension.crx”. If you have downloaded it multiple times, you will have extra copies. Delete all copies with a number in parentheses within the name. Delete these files.

Hold down the Windows Logo key and tap the E key to open Windows Explorer and locate the above mentioned “crx” file.

Open a Google Chrome Browser window on your desktop alongside the already opened Windows Explorer window from step 4. You will be using both screens to drag from one to other.

Click the “Customize and Control Google Options” button in the upper right hand of the Google Chrome window. Select Settings and open the Extensions page from the upper left.

Drag the smartvaultbrowserextension.crx from the Explorer window opened in step 3 and drop it on the Extensions page.

Expected Behavior

You should see a popup that will ask “Do you want to Add ‘SmartVault Browser Extention’” Click the Add button. You will notice the SmartVault icon displayed in the Chrome bar at the top right of your browser window.

Symptom

SmartVault Drive performance is slow or sluggish on a Windows 7 computer.

Cause

This issue typically occurs when the Automatically detect settings option for Local Area Network (LAN) Settings in Internet Explorer is enabled.

In Windows 7, disabling the Automatically detect settings option for LAN settings in Internet Explorer improves the way Windows Explorer communicates with the SmartVault Drive.

The SmartVault Drive works in conjunction with Windows Explorer, and in the Microsoft operating system, Internet Explorer works on top of Windows Explorer. Disabling this setting in Internet Explorer improves the way Windows Explorer communicates with the SmartVault Drive.

Note: Even if you use a browser other than Internet Explorer, such as Mozilla Firefox, if the Automatically detect settings option for Local Area Network (LAN) Settings in Internet Explorer is enabled, the performance of the SmartVault Drive may be slow or sluggish on a Windows 7 computer.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, ensure that the Automatically detect settings option for Local Area Network (LAN) Settings in Internet Explorer is disabled.

Note: Even if you use a browser other than Internet Explorer, such as Mozilla Firefox, disabling the Automatically detect settings option for Local Area Network (LAN) Settings in Internet Explorer will improve the performance of the SmartVault Drive.

To ensure that the Automatically detect settings option in Internet Explorer is disabled:

Close all open Internet Explorer browser windows and Windows Explorer windows.

Open Internet Explorer.
